Designed specifically for sport divers, Shearwater’s new Tern and Tern TX models embody the pinnacle of dive computer technology. These lightweight and robust devices are meticulously crafted, offering simplicity, reliability, and an unrivalled level of compactness.
Building upon the success of the popular Shearwater Peregrine dive computer, the Tern and Tern TX adopt a watch-like round format similar to the more sophisticated (and expensive) Shearwater Teric. This innovative design seamlessly blends functionality with style, making them a compelling addition to Shearwater’s product line.
The Shearwater Tern can be considered a lightweight and thinner Peregrine version of the Teric. At the same time, the Tern TX additionally incorporates the air integration and digital compass functions of the Perdix 2.
This fusion of features caters to a wide range of diving preferences, making the Tern TX an ideal choice for divers seeking a transmitter-enabled computer with compass.
However, neither model includes OC mixed gas technical and CCR modes. This intentional omission reflects their target audience – recreational Air and Nitrox divers from beginner to advanced levels, who mainly do not require these specialised modes.
Designed and manufactured in Canada, the Tern and Tern TX are depth-rated to 120 meters and rigorously tested to comply with engineering EN standards. Both models support Air, Nitrox, 3 Gas Nitrox, Gauge, and Freedive modes, ensuring versatility across diverse diving experiences. With a memory capacity of 500 diving hours and a battery life of 20 hours in dive mode, these computers are designed to withstand even the most demanding underwater adventures.
Anticipating the immense popularity of the Tern models, we have proactively placed a substantial pre-order with Shearwater to ensure adequate stock levels. We are confident these exceptional dive computers will set a new benchmark for the sport diving community.

As depicted in the picture below, while the bezel and buttons of the Tern are silver in colour, they are black for the Tern TX.

The Shearwater TERN TX difference:
In addition to all of the above the Tern TX has two fundamental functional differences to the Tern.
- It is transmitter enabled to provide real-time gas pressure readings during a dive
- It has a digital compass for underwater navigation
Simply put, the enhanced Tern TX boasts transmitter-enabled diving and is capable of connecting with up to four Swift gas pressure transmitters as well as having a digital compass for superior underwater navigation.
In the words of Jason Leggatt, CEO of Shearwater Research Inc., “The Tern is an affordable option for anyone seeking a compact sport diving computer.” In contrast, the Tern TX brings transmitter-enabled computers to more divers, delivering precision gas pressure information on a brilliant display.”
You can purchase the Tern TX on its own if you already have a transmitter or purchase one later on. You can also buy the Tern TX together with a Swift transmitter.
Neither the Tern nor the Tern TX support OC technical (i.e. five gas) or CCR & CC bailout modes, which a majority of sport divers do not need or use.
Shearwater TERN or TERN TX?
While both units are watch-format similar to the Teric it is worth noting these are thinner and lighter than the Teric and are ideal recreational dive computers you can wear all day, anywhere.
If you already have a transmitter or will consider purchasing one for a real-time monitoring of your consumption with the additional benefit of a digital compass, the higher-priced Shearwater Tern-TX is the one to look for.
If you trust your existing compass and and SPG gauge, comfortable with using both, the cheaper Shearwater Tern would definitely be an equally good purchase.
We are excited to see Shearwater continue to push the boundaries of dive computer innovation with these two new wearable computer models.
These computers are sure to be a hit with recreational divers of all levels who are looking for a reliable, feature-rich, and stylish dive computer they can wear all day and dive.
If you love the Shearwater Peregrine Dive Computer as much as we do, you’ll love the Tern and Tern TX!
