The Tovatec Fusion 1500 is possibly the best hand-held scuba diving torch to hit the UK market in 2019 and definitely a UE staff favourite in wake of its end-of-line predecessor for those looking for an all-purpose hand-held primary light.
The light kit comes complete in a purpose-built hard case with a Tovatec 26650 rechargeable Li-Ion battery,? charge cradle, USB cable, an Alkaline AA battery cradle, wrist lanyard and spare o-rings.
OUR VERDICT: For £120 and nearly with the power and punch of a canister torch five times its price, this variable beam 1500 Lumen dive light is bound to make any UK or traveling recreational diver looking for an all-purpose hand-held ‘primary’ torch extremely happy for years to come.
The Fusion 1500 is a slim body primary dive light with a whopping 1500 lumen output that can be controlled by 3 power settings; 100%, 50% and 30% – with the bonus of having an extra strobe mode where the light rapidly flashes on and off, making it great for emergency signalling (which hopefully you?ll never need!).
One of the best things about this torch is its adjustable beam angle making the most out of the powerful lumen it boasts at a natural ?white? colour temperature between 5600-6800 Kelvin.
Ranging from a 12º tight “technical” beam with a lot of thrust that can pierce through silty water, focus on subjects and provide for signalling, up to a broad 100º wide beam that shines over a wider area with no hot spot, it?s an ideal light for any condition including? photo and video dives. Beam adjustments are made simply by sliding the light head in and out.
Constructed of aircraft grade aluminium with a hard rubber texture and a 100m depth rating, the torch feels really robust and steady as well as extremely comfortable in the hand with a non-slip surface unlike shiny aluminium bodies.
With its included 26650 Li-Ion rechargeable battery installed, the torch weighs about 600gm on the surface and is easy to carry during a dive both on its manufacturer-supplied wrist lanyard as well as attached to a BC D-ring.
The better part of the Tovatec Fusion 1500 is that it comes not only with its rechargeable Li-Ion battery, charger and USB cable (to plug into a computer or wall adapter), but also an Alkaline battery cradle which can take 3 optional AA Alkaline batteries.
These would extend run times (over 3 hrs), allow spare power for longer weekends and make the torch lighter than 500gm without the Li-Ion battery while traveling abroad – where you can simply pick up AA batteries when you arrive.
Another feature of the Fusion 1500 is that it is part of the trusted and tested TOVATEC series of dive lights that have a Pressure Safety Valve at back of its double o-ring battery cap to prevent any explosive or popping encounters due to battery leaks (as rare as they are). On either side of the valve on the back cap are two convenient slots for lanyard or clip attachment.
Earlier versions of the Fusion series torches had slide switches whereas the 2019 series boasts more reliable and durable water-tight press switches that can easily be operated by one hand while holding the light. The sequence is simple: 100% on first press, then 50%, followed by 30% and SOS strobe, ending with Off.
Once you get used to it, it?s a breeze and takes hardly any time to switch between power modes but if you want a short-cut and avoid an eye-catching SOS flash, simply press the power button for 3 seconds and the light will turn off without switching through any subsequent modes.
Like all underwater light systems, the Fusion 1500 needs regular rinsing under fresh water after every dive to remove any sand and dirt as well as salt buildup, but has the additional benefit of having a removable light head for longer term maintenance.
Sometime down the road should your lens or LED become dirty and not rinse off as easily, you can simply unscrew the light head and clean both lens and LED with a soft dry cloth. Then screw the head back on and you?re ready to go.
Distributed in the UK by our supplier CPS Partnership, renown for its quality products and excellent customer service & aftercare, the Fusion 1500 comes with a free hard-case with pre-cut slots to accept the torch and all its accessories making it safe and easy to transport.
Still, if you think it’s too big or strong for your needs, its smaller sibling Tovatec Fusion 1050 comes with similar specs in a slimmer and lighter body with plenty of light thanks to its slightly lower 1050 lumen variable beam output. You can read about the Fusion 1050 here.
OUR VERDICT: For £130* and nearly with the power and punch of a canister torch five times its price, this variable beam 1500 Lumen dive light is bound to make any UK or traveling recreational diver looking for an all-purpose hand-held ?primary? torch extremely happy for years to come. *Price correct at time of publication.
